I was forty-one years old when I found out my last name was a lie.
It came in a phone call — not a dramatic one, not the kind you see in movies where somebody sits down slow and the music swells. No. Aunt Pearl called me on a Tuesday afternoon while I was standing in the checkout line at Fry's in Scottsdale, Arizona, holding a bag of frozen shrimp and a bottle of hot sauce, thinking about nothing more important than dinner.
“Baby,” she said, her voice that same mix of sweet tea and sandpaper it had always been, “I need to tell you something before the Lord calls me home.”
